>The Kirtland period was a preparatory period
As the Israelites used to say:
Look folks. The revelations that Moses has given us since he came down from talking to the Lord the second time are the true gospel. Obviously whatever Moses was up to the first time around was not anything like the fullness of rules and regulations that we have today! We know that the first time Moses went up to the mountain he was just getting ready to receive the fullness of the gospel that we have today. I thank the Lord every day that Moses was able to learn from his mistakes, and break that first set of tablets, in which he would have required us to each become prophets. Can you imagine the chaos in the church if everyone was a prophet? How absurd! We need a strong Priesthood leader to give us firm symbolism and doctrines!
Was I sealed to my wife ten years ago in the Idaho Falls Temple? What covenant did I make with her there? Before reading more, please ponder specifically what covenant the LDS people make upon being married in an LDS temple. Forget all they hype about it, and focus specifically upon the covenant.
Got an answer?
The specific covenant that I made with my wife in the LDS temple in Idaho Falls Idaho, was to receive her to be my LAWFULLY WEDDED WIFE. That is the sum total of the covenant that we made. I agreed to be married to her ACCORDING TO THE LAWS OF THE STATE OF IDAHO!!!! I was married by the state of Idaho, and not by God.
>As far as the current covenant It is not >intentionally meaning that you are being >married by the laws of the State. The law >its speaking of is the Law of God...
People are not Lawfully married by God. They are Lawfully married by a government. The temple ceremonies used to say "Receive this woman by the hand of the priesthood", "Have no sexual intercourse with anyone other than your husband or wives given you by the priesthood" or words to that effect. Mr. Grant changed the ordinance so that adultery would no longer be called such by the church. The church is now fully incorporated, and does only that which the LAWS of the land give it permission to do. (The church can't marry someone without permission of the State.) Since the laws of the land have no power to seal in heaven, a church who's existence depends on those laws, has no power to seal in heaven either.
Without a covenant, there is no sealing. The LDS church does not administer a covenant of marriage. They simply rubber stamp the laws of the land. Where is the covenant of the LDS marriage ceremony? With the state, not with God.
Consider now if I had taken my wife by the right hand in the more sure sign of the nail and had said to her with all the feeling and energy of my heart, and with full intention of forever after being true to my word:
Art thou my sister?
I salute you in the name of the Lord
Jesus Christ, in token or remembrance of
the everlasting covenant, in which
covenant I receive you to fellowship, in a
determination which is fixed,
immovable, and unchangeable, to be
your friend and brother through the
grace of God, in the bonds of love, to
walk in all the commandments of God,
blameless in thanksgiving, forever and
ever. Ahman

Is this not a higher ordinance that what is currently being taught in the LDS temple ceremony? And even among many of the fundamentalist Mormons? Is this not the sealing power being manifest? Would not a covenant like this have more power than all the laws of the state of Utah and the rules of the LDS church?
What if I make this same covenant with a dear brother? Am I not then sealed to him? Have I not sealed in heaven what I have just sealed on Earth? Do I now have a husband?
When was section 132, the section on sealings and plural marriage, supposedly received? As early as 1831! What? This is Kirtland Temple time. Joseph tried through all the intervening years to raise the people to the level where they could receive the lessons of Kirtland, but alas, all he could do is give us the lower law, the temple ceremonies, and hope that in some way, that a few would be able to see through the symbolism to the higher law.
Once I understood what was happening at Kirtland, I no longer needed the symbolism of Nauvoo.
I use the name of Korihor for this post, because I am expressing ideas that are so heretical to my mainstream Mormon upbringing and traditional western thought patterns, that I have to place a disclaimer on them....
It's as hard for me to write such apostate ideas as it is for many of you to ponder them. But I ain't yet let that stop me from writing when I delude myself into thinking I'm inspired. If what I say helps someone to go to God direct to resolve a paradox, then it is well worth the pain it causes me to discard an old paradigm, and speak openly of a new one.
>We would have never known the significance >of the "new and everlasting covenant" >Had it not been for Navuoo.
Perhaps because of Nauvoo, we think we know the significance, when the real significance is hidden behind the smoke screen of the Nauvoo/Salt Lake Temple symbolism.
Once I understood the Kirtland temple, the Nauvoo temple ceremonies became irrelevant.
>Joseph Smith received the fullness of the gospel line >upon line just as Jesus Christ did.
That Joseph received line upon line is the current LDS sanitized paradigm.
David Whitmer, one of the 3 special witnesses to the Book of Mormon, recounts a very different view of Joseph's ministry than mainstream LDS would portray. The mainstream LDS approach is to say that Joseph got better and better all the time, and revealed a purer and purer gospel with each passing year. David Whitmer tells just the opposite story. That Joseph's gospel started out pure, but got more and more coarse as the years went by. For example: David claims that the organization of the church ACCORDING TO THE LAWS OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, was the beginning of troubles for the church. David's claim makes a lot of sense. If you consider that Joseph is the only man in recorded history to have supposedly talked face to face with God the Father since the fall. And if you believe that looking into heaven for five minutes would teach you more about it than all the books that have ever been written. Joseph knew what was going on from the beginning, and his later attempts were to raise the people to a level where they could receive what Joseph had already received. The people consistently fell short, and the gospel Joseph taught was consistently dumbed down to allow them to receive what they could handle. A dumbing down which continues even today.

Two perspectives on the purity within the church.
>First he was >given the Aaronic priesthood, then the Melchisedic, >and he did not receive the Patriarchal until Moses, >Elijah and Elias appeared to him in the Nauvoo Temple.
D&C section 110 says that these keys were received in the KIRTLAND temple in 1836. Joseph never received any more priesthood keys after Kirtland! What does this mean? A fullness of the Sealing Power was had in KIRTLAND! When was section 132 (plural marriage) received? According to the LDS D&C, it was received in 1831. This is before KIRTLAND temple time!
> ... and Man to Man Sealings >to unite Adams Family in one long chain of Priesthood from >Adam down to the Last Priesthood holder on the earth.
Again, this is the LDS apologist's mainstream paradigm for what was going on. The LDS church does not do Man to Man sealings any more, it is too kinky, seems like something a gay person would do. (bad media coverage) Brigham young was sealing men to him as sons, because it was too hard to do what really needed doing. Sealing them to him as husbands. Until the time comes that you merge with and become one with someone else, you are not sealed. The father-to-son thing in one long line of priesthood is phony. If you are not sealed to someone who "has it made" you are not sealed to for eternity.
From my perspective, the laws of exaltation were taught at Kirtland, and the law of Moses was taught at Nauvoo.
