I will liken the gospel to building a beautiful building. The church is the scaffolding to build the building. In otherwards its a tool for building. The leaders of the church have long told us the day would come when meetings etc. would be pared down to one meeting on sunday and the rest is to be done in the home. The secret is the building is you and me as individuals we are each the beautiful buildings being built. The structure of the church is scaffolding when the roof is on the and the exterior is finished the scaffolding comes down (the church) and we continue the finish work on the inside. Problem is people think the scaffolding is the building and begin to worship the scaffolding and if anyone else gets a roof on and begins to take their scaffolding down they persecute them and say there is no building if you take down the scaffolding. And they get comfortable on the scaffolding and never "progress" towards finishing the building. Pretty soon all they see is the scaffolding and lose sight of the orginal intent to build a beautiful building. And it never gets built and when the wind and rains and storms come they have no protection from them. But they continue to cry that the scaffolding (church) is the only protection because they have failed to build the building (themselves) and come unto Christ who offers the only real protection.
The structure of the church is only a tool to help point the way but when it loses sight of that and tries to become the way then it leads astray. For Christ is the only way to the Father John 14:6, and the church is not Christ. Its mission is to bring people to Christ but it has set itself up "as" Christ. And changed the ordinances (tools) that point the way and now wanders. The ordinances and tokens etc. are tokens & symbols of the real thing not the real thing. The endowment is designed to teach you who you are even though it has been watered down over the years you can still learn from it. The temple represents you, you go there go into various rooms of increasingly brighter light, this is what is supposed to happen on the inside of you. Your not saved by simply putting your hands in certain positions nor passing through the ceremonies. but only if you learn the lessons they were designed to teach which is to part the veil and become at-one-ment with God. The outward ordinances are of no value unless you internalize them and become as Christ. They are the scaffolding! You are the temple of God. And the entire kingdom of God is within you!. Luke 17:21
