You are right, the current LDS philosophy that God would remove an unrighteous prophet out of his place by killing him is very insulting, not only to the memory of the dead prophets, but also to the apostles who die before they become president, and to the members of the church who should be able to discern for themselves whether or not the current prophet is worthy of being sustained.

The method that Christ set up for removing unrighteous leaders is not assassination by the Godhead, but rather it is the lack of a sustaining vote by the members of the church. If the members refuse to magnify their calling to remove wicked leaders, then they deserve to follow those leaders in unrighteousness.

If you accept the premise that the Lord is controlling who becomes prophet based on who lives the longest and that the Lord would remove an unrighteous prophet by death, then don't you have to wonder every time an apostle or prophet dies if it was for apostasy?
